Juan Pérez Mercader

Born in Alcalá de Guadaira, in the province of Seville in 1947, he holds a degree in Physical Sciences from the University of Seville, an MSc in Mathematics and Theoretical Physics from Trinity College, Dublin and an MPhil from City University, New York. He also holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in Physics from City College, New Cork. Having concluded his BSc studies, he spent a year as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Barcelona, leaving for Ireland in 1973. In 1975 he won a Fulbright Scholarship and moved to the USA, where he remained until the end of 1983, when he returned to Spain to join the CSIC, where he works as a Research Professor. Since 1989 he has been a Laboratory Consultant at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, USA. In 1990 he began work with the INTA, founding the LAEFF (Spatial Astrophysics and Fundamental Physics Laboratory), where he worked until 1999. In 1994 he began INTA's Department of Basic Sciences and Instrumentation, and was its Director until 1999. Since April 2000 he has been Director of the Centre for Astrobiology (Joint CSIC-INTA Center), started up in Spain in association with the NASA Astrobiology Institute, with Juan Pérez as its founder and driving force. It is currently home to some 100 engineers and scientists.
