Born in Bermeo, in the province of Biscay, he is a Doctor of Naval and Industrial Engineering. Although he spent part of his life working in naval construction, his professional path soon turned towards university teaching and research. He was Associate Professor of Mechanics and Director of Studies at the Advanced Industrial Engineering School of the University of Navarra in San Sebastián, and later moved to Biscay, where in 1977 he was awarded the Chair of Mechanics at the Bilbao Industrial Engineering School. Since 1978 he has been a Lecturer in Mechanics at the Advanced Industrial Engineering School of the University of Navarra.

Between 1978 and 1993 he was Director of the Advanced Engineering School of San Sebastián and, from 1982 to 1993, Director of the Center for Technical Research Studies of Guipúzcoa (CEIT), run by the Basque Government. In 1992 he moved to Pamplona as Vice-Rector for Research of the University of Navarra. Since 1996 he has been Rector of the University of Navarra and Chairman of the Navarra University-Business Foundation (FEUN).
